Where a high sulphide recovery is demanded, flotation methods are now in general use, but in the days before flotation was known, a large part of the worlds gold was recovered by concentrating the gold bearing sulphides on tables and smelting or regrinding and amalgamating the product. Though the modern trend is away from the use of tables, because flotation is so much more efficient.
However, one of the most interesting methods is froth flotation. Froth flotation works by exploiting the hydrophobic properties of gold molecules. First, ore is ground into an extremely fine powder. The powdered ore is mixed with water to create a slurry, which is mixed with surfactants to increase the golds hydrophobicity.
Gold Flotation Column. In view of the tendency of fine gold recover by floating and the dominance of heavy minerals, the prospects for flotation were worthy of re investigation, particularly with the new tools of the air sparged hydrocyclone and the flotation column.
